Too hot outside? Escape to our air-conditioned escape room (and the mystery of a vanished family)

Published on 8 May 2026 - 4 min read

It is too hot in the Netherlands. The thermometer is through the roof, the sun blinds at home no longer help, and your kids are asking for the sixth time whether the paddling pool can be inflated while you are thinking about crawling into the fridge.

Welcome to the Dutch heat problem: a country where 95% of homes have no air conditioning, where theme parks bake in the sun, and where the beach is a race against the queues at the food stalls.

At Skunx Escape Rooms in Houten we have air conditioning. A real one. One that works. Our space stays at a pleasant ~21°C, even when it is 32 outside. And inside that cool space? A 60-minute mystery that your kids will still be talking about next weekend, about a holiday home that vanished without a trace in 1988, together with a young family.

This is your escape route from the heat. Book your cool escape room outing now or read on to find out why this is exactly the outing you are looking for.

How cool is it really at Skunx?

We keep our escape room House of Nowhere at a pleasant 21°C all summer long.

Why an escape room is the perfect heatwave outing

1. 100% indoors. No exposure

No queues in the sun, no walk from the car park to the attraction. You step straight out of the car into your cool experience.

2. 60 minutes fully absorbed

Nobody thinks about the heat while unravelling a mystery. A playground offers 10 minutes of focus for you, your friends, family or your child; an escape room offers 60 minutes of flow for the whole family, friends and work outings!

3. No crowds

You get your own time slot. A cooled, private experience!

4. Everyone joins in, even in a heatwave mood

On tropical days everyone is a bit short-tempered. An escape room makes you work together in a fun way. Within 5 minutes this morning's irritations are forgotten.

5. Snacks and drinks on site

Cold drinks afterwards. Nothing brings people together like talking over "how did we do that again?" with a cold drink while not sweating.

Who is this the ideal heatwave outing for?

Families with children aged 8 and up

House of Nowhere is suitable from age 8. One of the lowest age limits in the Netherlands. For 2 to 5 players, so your whole family can come along at once.

People who skip theme parks because they don't want to melt in the queue

The most common objection to theme parks on hot days: 45 minutes standing on the asphalt for 90 seconds of roller coaster. An escape room is the opposite: 60 minutes of full action without a single second of waiting.

Companies whose office productivity melts on hot days

Employees at the office at 28°C: nobody gets anything done. Instead of a half-hearted afternoon, plan an hour of cool team building. With our prices from €114 for the whole group, it costs less than an organised drinks event and everyone comes back wide awake.

FromTravel time

Remember: a 30-minute drive in your air-conditioned car to a 60-minute air-conditioned adventure is a total cooling package of an hour and a half. That is more than you got all day.

Is an escape room suitable for young children?

House of Nowhere is suitable from age 8. The story is mysterious, not scary, with no jump scares and no horror. Think the Efteling feeling, not the haunted house feeling.

How long will you be with us?

The escape room itself takes 60 minutes. Plus the introduction, photos and a drink afterwards: count on ~90 minutes on site. All in the air conditioning.

Can we book last-minute on a hot day?

Yes, as long as there are slots available. On tropical days our evening slots fill up quickly. Ideally book in the morning for the same evening.

What does it cost?

From €108 for 2 people to €135 for 5 people on weekdays, per group, not per person. 60 minutes of private adventure with cooling as a bonus.

Do you have drinks as well?

Yes. Cold drinks, snacks and treats are ready in our reception area.

Is your location wheelchair accessible?

No, but limited mobility is possible! Call or message us to be sure. We are happy to explain everything personally on 085 2500 430.

Are there more rooms coming / is Skunx anywhere else?

We are now based in Houten, where we are expanding our concept further. Sign up for our newsletter on the site to be the first to hear about new rooms.

Also read our complete guide for parents on choosing a family escape room. It answers every question you might have honestly, without sales talk.

Ready to escape the heat?

The story of House of Nowhere begins the moment you step inside. For 60 minutes you are not the parent with grumpy kids on a tropical day, but the lead in a mystery that has been waiting for 38 years.
