Escape Room with Kids: Everything You Need to Know as a Parent

More and more parents are discovering that an escape room is a fantastic outing with children. But isn't it too scary? From what age is it suitable? And what should you look out for? In this article we answer all the questions parents have about an escape room with children.

From what age can children join?

Most escape rooms in the Netherlands have a minimum age of 10 to 12. But there are exceptions. At Skunx Escape Rooms in Houten our escape room is suitable for children from age 8. The puzzles are designed to challenge adults while remaining accessible to children working together with their parents.

Children aged 8 to 12 play under the supervision of an adult. From 12, children may play on their own if they want to, and from 16 no supervision is needed at all.

Is an escape room scary for children?

This is by far the most frequently asked question. And the answer depends on which escape room you choose. Many escape rooms use horror themes, dark spaces and jump scares. For most children (and frankly for many adults too) that is no fun.

At Skunx Escape Rooms we deliberately chose a different approach: no horror, no jump scares, no countdown clock. Our escape room House of Nowhere is a story-driven experience full of imagination and wonder. Think magical effects, enchanting music and an immersive story. Exciting enough to make your heart beat faster, but without frightening children.

What makes a good escape room for kids?

Not every escape room is suitable for children, even if the website says "ages 8+". What should you look out for?

  • No horror or jump scares - Children need to feel safe to enjoy themselves.
  • Story-driven puzzles - Children get involved in a story faster than in abstract puzzles.
  • Accessible difficulty - The puzzles should be challenging, but not frustrating.
  • A helpful game master - Who gives hints when needed, without taking away the fun.
  • A safe environment - No sharp objects, no frightening sounds, and always the option to leave.

An escape room as a family outing: why it works so well

An escape room is one of the few outings where the whole family really works together. No screen time, no distractions. Just solving puzzles together, communicating and sharing an adventure. Children love helping their parents (or the other way around), and the feeling of solving a puzzle together is priceless.

That is why an escape room is also perfect as a family outing in the May holidays or as a birthday present. It is indoors, so the weather doesn't matter, and it lasts just long enough (60 minutes) to make a great memory without children getting restless.

An escape room as a kids' party

More and more parents choose an escape room as a kids' party. It is original, interactive and something children will remember for a long time. At Skunx Escape Rooms a group of up to 5 people plays at a time. Perfect for a small, private party.

Tip: combine the escape room with a drink and a snack in our reception area afterwards. That makes it a complete party.

Practical tips for parents

  • Arrive 10 minutes early - There is a short introduction before the game starts.
  • Wear comfortable clothes - There are no heavy physical challenges, but freedom of movement is nice.
  • Phones stay in the locker - That sounds daunting, but it actually makes the experience better. No distractions!
  • Book in time - Popular time slots fill up quickly, especially during holidays and weekends.
